Movie Report: New York Film Critics Give Top Prize To ‘Lady Bird’

With award season getting into high gear, film critics in both of America’s major cities are getting in on the action.

This past week, both the New York and Los Angeles film critic groups released their awards for the best in film for 2017. For the east coast, it was “Lady Bird” taking the New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Film.

Other top awards given by the NYFCC, according to Variety, included:

  • Best Director: Sean Baker for “The Florida Project.”
  • Best Screenplay: Paul Thomas Anderson for “Phantom Thread.”
  • Best Actor: Timothee Chalamet for “Call me by Your Name.”
  • Best Actress: Saoirse Ronan for “Lady Bird.”
  • Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe for “The Florida Project.”
  • Best Supporting Actress: Tiffany Haddish for “Girls Trip.”
  • Best Cinematography: “Mudbound.”
  • Best Animated Film: “Coco.”

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, meanwhile, gave their top award to “Call me by Your Name.”

The other awards from the LAFCA, according to The Hollywood Reporter, include:

  • Best Director: A tie between Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water” and Luca Guadagnino for “Call me by Your Name.”
  • Best Actor: Timothee Chalamet for “Call me by Your Name.”
  • Best Actress: Sally Hawkins for “The Shape of Water.”
  • Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe for “The Florida Project.”
  • Best Supporting Actress: Laurie Metcalf for “Lady Bird.”
  • Best Animated Film: “The Breadwinner.”
  • Best Screenplay: Jordan Peele for “Get Out.”
  • Best Cinematography: “The Shape of Water.”

Inside the weekend box office this weekend, it was Pixar’s “Coco” taking the top spot again with more than $27 million. “Justice League” also stayed with its No. 2 spot, earning $16.6 million.

The full top five was:
1. Coco – $27,533,304
2. Justice League – $16,651,104
3. Wonder – $12,147,182
4. Thor: Ragnarok – $9,885,936
5. Daddy’s Home 2 – $7,572,390

The only wide market release this weekend is the comedy “Just Getting Started.” However, its likely that many award caliber films will be getting expansions this weekend to more theaters.

For the home screen, new releases include:

  • Despicable Me 3, Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 60%
  • American Assassin, Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 34%
