Monday Movie Report: Breaking Down ‘Star Wars” Big Weekend

The new “Star Wars” was a force to be reckoned with this weekend at theaters, as it snagged $220 million over the past few days.

The monster box office results were enough for “The Last Jedi” to earn the second highest U.S. opening in cinema history. The film’s first weekend trails only its predecessor, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which took in $247,966,675 in its opening, marking the highest ever.

“The Last Jedi” is also just the fourth film to earn more than $200 million in its opening weekend domestically. Other than “Star Wars,” the other two pictures getting that mark are “The Avengers” which earned $207,438,708 and “Jurassic World,” which snagged $208,806,270. The only other film that’s come close to breaking the $200 million barrier is “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which took in $191,271,109 in its first weekend.

Both recent “Star Wars” pictures easily surpass other modern box office results for the saga. Below “Last Jedi” and “Force Awakens,” the recent box office openings for the series include:

  • “Star Wars: Rogue One” – $155,081,681
  • “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” – $108,435,842
  • “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” – $80,027,814
  • “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” – $64,820,970

According to Box Office Mojo, estimates for a domestic total are around $750 million to $830 million. Box Office Mojo also reports that “Last Jedi” earned $230 million oversees, which marked the 10th largest international opening.

For Disney, “Last Jedi” is helping push the company to more than $2 billion domestically, joining Warner Bros. as the two studios to hit that number in 2017. Box Office Mojo writes that this is the third consecutive year Disney has reached $2 billion.

Because of the huge opening number, “Last Jedi” didn’t leave many leftovers for other flicks. The full top five from the weekend was:
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi – $220,047,000
2. Ferdinand – $13,325,000
3. Coco – $10,025,000
4. Wonder – $5,400,000
